The Miners
Memorial
The Line of Lode Association was funded in 2000 by a
Commonwealth Federation Grant to undertake a program of
preservation on the Line of Lode including a Miners Memorial. The
project designer was Christina Carayanides. The project was
commissioned to the University of South Australia.
Basic Facts:
The design reinforces the existing positive block and street
pattern of the city and reflects its role as a gateway to the
history of the community by being visible to the city;
· The Memorial faces its long axis directly
north-south in reference to the two residential halves of the
city. The short axis faces east-west addressing the rising and
setting of the sun in memoriam to those who have died working on
the Line of Lode.
· To accomplish the cruciform plan dictated by these
two axial references and achieve the dramatic edge experience
developed by this theoretical approach the Memorial has been
located towards the northern edge of the land.
