The Broken Earth
Complex
The Centre opened by the Deputy Prime Minster, the Hon. John
Anderson in April 2001 as part of the Federation project
initiatives. The Centre is located on the highest point of the
Line of Lode remnant mullock (skimp) dumps which transverse the
City of Broken Hill. The Centre is located on a mining lease held
by CBH Ltd.
The Visitors Centre is also the access point to the Miner’s
Memorial, which records the deaths of over 816 miners in Broken Hill
mines.
A national tourism icon the Centre sits 54 metres above the City
of Broken Hill and is only accessible from the road named Federation
Way. The $1.84m Miners’ Memorial and Visitors’ Centre were completed
in December 2000.
In 1996 and 1997 university students from Adelaide were involved
in a field trip to the mining community of Broken Hill where the
remaining operational company had offered to lease the non-working
surface infrastructure along the 7.3km Line of Lode orebody to the
community for development as a centre for tourism and education.
In 1996 students worked on designs for a Visitors’ Centre at the
South Mine and a Miners’ Memorial and restaurant on Delprats Dump.
In 1997 they worked on a mining museum and exhibition centre at the
North Mine site.
